Metro adds more buses to bangalore

With Namma Metro soon to be launched, the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) is in the process of adding buses to its fleet to bolster the public transport system further. Eight hundred new buses are being added which will increase the frequency of services and save commuters precious time. BMTC currently operates 6,078 vehicles in the city with 5,888 schedules daily. The schedules are likely to touch 7000 very soon, making public transportation more reliable.

Speaking to DC, Managing Director of BMTC, K. R. Sreenivas said: “This year we will add 800 buses to BMTC’s fleet. A number of old buses will also be replaced. We have had to increase the number of buses as the number of passengers switching to BMTC has gone up.” The Namma Metro Phase-1 will be completed only by 2014 and till then, the public will have to depend on BMTC for commuting. The launch of Reach-1 of Namma Metro will mainly serve people residing in the vicinity of the Reach-1 route. To ensure seamless connectivity to Metro travellers, BMTC plans to increase the schedule of buses plying from Shivajinagar bus station, Mayo Hall bus station etc.

“There has been some impact of the Bus Day campaign, after which quite a number of people have started using BMTC buses. This has helped in terms of the environment as a number of private vehicles have gone off the road,” claims Mr Sreenivas.
